I started with the tutorial to quickly learn how to navigate through the game. Once I did that the tutorial ended and let me take control over the game. I pretty much followed Diamond's theory that you need FOOD to support people. The game took forever but was extremely fun because the challenge was to produce enough food, keep trade between the cities of my empire, and keep up with the upgrades in the religious and military aspects of the game. My goal was to keep trae up with Ghandi and once I had enough minions to command I would conquer his empire. This strategy worked and it worked because my cities had enough trade between the 4 of them to maintain themselves independantly without needing Ghandi's goods. With this strong trading going on, I used religion to keep the cities happy and continuously built monuments in every single city, and never limited my empire by enforcing practices such as slavery or feudalism. I did this because I didn't want to have a cultural backlash at a pivitol point in the game and not have calculated it into my strategy. So with a strong economy, and a content culture it was very easy to produce more soldiers than Ghandi and soldiers of better caliber than Ghandi. Conquering the other empire was very easy this time around.

Since I have yet to gain the courage to go up against any of my neighbors, I can certainly respect your strategy against Ghandi. However, if you are around the same African part of the game that I am, then Ghandi would be the least of your concerns. I'm facing constant Mongolian threats and always on the verge of a war. Nevertheless, focusing on better roads seem to provide faster success to the game then conquest. I am still in the middle of Civ (around 1550s), so I might be completely wrong; however, I have to wonder if you continue invading, how do you plan on continuing to keep peace among the different societies? Remember the fall of Rome was weakened from within its own borders. With that being said, I am really interested to hear about your further success in the game and what strategies will continue to help you win.

I think your tatic with Ghandi is a good one. I also use this tactic. I have found that by having open trade and boarders with other civilizations has allowed me to have good relationships with other civilization but also accquite resources and technology through trade with them.

I however did not take the steps to invade another civilization that early in the game. I waited until I was a much strogner and larger civilization.
